Endowment Management

The management of endowment funds would appear to be fairly straight-forward. Trustees establish an investment policy with asset allocation targets. Trustees also set a spending policy, typically as a percentage of a moving average of asset values. The investment management task is simply to comply with the policy and try to outperform the benchmark consistent with the asset allocation targets.

As is indicated by our investment philosophy, we follow a 'best practicesí investment model that sets careful policy objectives, adheres to investment disciplines and complies with highest fiduciary standards. This approach provides our endowment clients with highly sophisticated strategic services as well as a focus on investment performance.

But 'Invest in Contextí for endowment funds goes much further than this. It understands that investment policy must consider more than risk and return. It must be sensitive as well to the importance of the endowment draw to the overall operating budget; it must consider the predictability and volatility of operating revenues and costs; it must reflect the values of the organization as it trades off current needs for long term goals; it must recognize the potential for future bequests; and it must respect fiduciary responsibility.
